Softball requires certain equipment and safety gear. While teams often supply much of the equipment, individual players must also have certain pieces of gear in order to play. The International Softball Federation, or ISF, enforces specific rules regarding equipment and gear.
Bases
Softball fields must have three bases and a home plate. These bases must be securely attached to the field to prevent accidents or injury.
Bats
Softball bats can be made of wood or other materials, including bamboo, plastic, graphite, carbon, fiberglass or a combination of these materials. The bat must be round and smooth. The bat’s length cannot exceed 34 inches, and its diameter cannot exceed 2 ¼ inches. The bat cannot weigh more than 38 ounces.
Softballs
Slow-pitch softballs measure 11 inches in circumference and fast-pitch softballs measure 12 inches in circumference. Softballs contain cork and rubber centers and have smooth seams or concealed stitches on the outside. The softball typically has a yellow or similar brightly colored exterior. Softballs used in official competition must meet ISF equipment standards.
Gloves and Mitts
Catchers and first basemen can wear mitts without fingers. These mitts are larger and more heavily padded than other fielders' gloves. All other defensive players can wear gloves with individual fingers. The mitts and gloves cannot match the color of the ball. Gloves and mitts protect the defensive players’ hands from impact when catching the ball.
Shoes
Softball players must wear shoes at all times. The shoes can have smooth soles or soft or hard cleats. Players cannot wear shoes with detachable cleats.
Helmets
Any defensive player can choose to wear a helmet. Batters must wear helmets while on deck, while batting, while running and while on base. The batter’s helmet must have two ear flaps. The catcher must wear a helmet, but her helmet does not have to have ear flaps. Many helmets have chin straps to ensure that they remain securely attached to the head.
Other Protective Gear
Catchers must wear a face mask, throat protector and helmet at all times while on the field. The catcher must also wear a chest or body protector and shin guards. Other players can wear face masks if they wish.
