Before the onset of modern warfare, warriors relied heavily on swords during battle. Vikings and the medieval knights of Europe used swords to cut down enemies. The samurai and ninja of Japan also used swords to battle each other. Some of the common sword techniques that were used in combat include the thrust, vertical cut, diagonal cut and counter cut. If you want to practice these techniques, it is a good idea to use wooden or padded swords. It is also recommended that you wear protective gear like a face mask and chest guard when engaging in a recreational sword fight.

Thrust

The thrust is a sword technique that can abruptly end a fight. When you thrust a sword at your opponent, you stab the blade into his body. The thrust can be done when holding the sword with one hand or two hands. The vikings performed the thrust with one hand while holding a shield with the other hand. You can thrust a sword into an opponent’s torso or at his head. Make the thrust more powerful by taking a step toward your adversary as you stab him.

Vertical Cut

Your opponent’s head is typically the target of a vertical cut. To perform this cut, grip the sword with both hands and lift it above your head. Swiftly cut straight down toward your opponent’s head. The motion of this cut is similar to chopping down with an axe. Do not waste time when performing this cut because you may leave yourself open to an attack.

Diagonal Cut

Another devastating technique that is used in sword combat is the diagonal cut. The samurai warriors of Japan used this technique to defeat opponents. The diagonal cut typically slices an opponent from his shoulder to his opposite hip. Perform this technique by holding the sword high with both hands and slashing down diagonally through your opponent’s body. The diagonal cut is often used after parrying an attacker’s sword. For example, if your opponent attempts a downward attack to your head, you can raise your sword to block the attack and follow up with a diagonal cut.

Counter Cut

The counter cut is an effective way of defending yourself against an attack. The concept of counter cutting has been used by many warriors throughout history, including the medieval knights. Perform a counter cut by slashing an opponent as he attempts to cut you. For example, if an adversary tries to swing at you with his sword, you can cut his arm as he strikes.
