Relief for Migraine Headaches

Migraine headaches are painful and debilitating. In addition, other incapacitating symptoms may accompany these headaches. Nausea, vomiting, vision changes, and fatigue are a few of the common accompanying effects. While there is no permanent cure for migraine headaches, reducing the occurrence of the headaches and managing the symptoms is possible. Exploring medication options may benefit those with frequent, severe headaches.

Step 1

Get proper rest. Getting enough sleep and sticking to a routine sleeping schedule may help some individuals avoid migraine headaches.

Step 2

Keep a diary. Identifying triggers to migraine headaches is vital to managing the occurrence of the headaches. Many individuals are affected by foods, stress, and other factors that induce headaches.

Step 3

Drink plenty of water. Drinking plenty of water will not only ensure proper hydration, it may help you avoid a headache. Aim to drink at least six to eight full glasses daily and more in extreme heat.

Step 4

Treat pain immediately with prescription medications. If you have opted to treat your migraine headaches with prescription medication, take the medication when the first sign of the migraine strikes. Waiting until the headache is full-blown may reduce the effectiveness of the medication.

Step 5

Try over-the-counter medicines. For those who prefer alternatives to prescription pain medications, over-the-counter options may provide some relief. Over-the-counter medications such as acetaminophen, ibuprofen, and aspirin may not be as effective as prescriptions, but they may help some individuals.

Tips and Warnings

  • Avoid overuse of medications. Overuse of medications, whether prescription or over-the-counter, may bring about more headaches. These headaches are called "rebound headaches."
