Many men spend most of their workout time in the weight room. Building muscle is essential to every wellness program, but it is also important to raise your heart rate and burn calories. Men who want to lose weight should look for a cardio exercise that they enjoy.

Team Sports

To lose a pound a week, you need to burn 3,500 more calories per week than you consume. The quickest way to burn calories is to raise your heart rate through cardio exercise. Many men find this to be an enjoyable way to burn calories. A game of basketball will burn 690 calories an hour for a 190-pound man, a game of soccer will burn 863 calories an hour and a game of flag football will burn 690 calories an hour.

Cycling

Cycling raises your heart rate, burns calories and tones your leg muscles. A 155-pound person will burn 518 calories an hour with a light effort, 690 calories anhour with a moderate effort and 863 calories ab hour with a vigorous effort.

Running or Walking

Running and walking both burn calories. However, to burn 3,500 calories in a week, you would need to spend two hours a day walking. So, it is best to try and raise your heart rate by running if you can. Running also build muscle while walking does not. A 155-pound person will burn 863 calories per hour running a 10-minute mile. The same person will burn 216 calories walking at a slow pace and 345 calories walking at a brisk pace of 4 miles per hour.

Swimming

Swimming burns nearly 700 calories per hour but does not stress your joints. This means you could swim every day without a major risk for injury. The water also adds resistance, which tones your muscle. This leads to more weight loss because every pound of muscle burns between 30 and 50 extra calories a day.
