In round robin tennis tournaments, each player must play a match against every other player. Once all matches have been completed, the tournament director should calculate the percentage of matches each player won. The player who won the highest percentage of matches wins the tournament. Ties often occur between two or more players, however. The United States Tennis Association (USTA) recommends several different tie-break procedures for round robin tournaments. Individual tournaments should determine and announce the tie-break method to be used before the start of the event.

Head-to-Head Results

If two players tie in a round robin tournament, consult the result of the match the two players played against each other. The player who won that match wins the tournament. If more than two players tie in a round robin tournament, consult the results of all matches involving the tied players. The player who won the highest percentage of those matches wins the tournament.

Sets

If two or more players won the same percentage of matches, determine a winner by calculating the total number of sets or the percentage of sets each player won. The player with the highest number of sets won or the highest percentage of sets won wins the tournament.

Games

You can also break a tie by determining which player won the highest total number of games or the highest percentage of games.

Consecutive Ties

In rare cases, one tie-break method might yield another tie. For example, two players who won the same percentage of matches might also have won the same percentage of sets. Before the start of the tournament, determine second and third tie-break methods to use in case of consecutive ties.
