The round robin tournament format ensures that each player will get to play the same number of matches. These tournaments work well for young tennis players and for community social events. The more entrants you have, of course, the longer the tournament will take to complete.
Match Format
You can use any match format in a round robin tournament as long as you announce the format to be used before the start of the event. For children and social tournaments, for example, you might want to use matches with sets played to four games rather than six games. If you use standard sets, you might want to play best of three set matches rather than best of five set matches to make time for more matches each day. Using tie-break sets instead of advantage sets will also ensure that match duration remains relatively predictable.
Defaulted Matches
If a player defaults on a match for any reason, the tournament director should record that match as a win for her opponent. Before the start of the tournament, agree on a set score to record for defaulted matches. For example, if the tournament consists of four-game sets, you might decide to record the score for all defaulted matches as having been completed in two 4-0 sets.
Determining the Winner
Once all the matches in the round robin have been completed, calculate the percentage of matches each player won. Divide the number of matches a player won by the number of matches he played and then multiply by 100. The player who won the highest percentage of matches wins the tournament.
Breaking Ties
Select and announce the tie-break method to be used before you begin the tournament. If two or more players have won the same percentage of matches, you can resort to several alternate methods for determining a winner. If two players are tied, consult the results of those two players’ match against each other. The player who won that match wins the tournament. You can also determine which player has won the highest percentage of sets or games or the highest total of sets or games. If one of the players tied for first place has defaulted on a match, use the set default match score in the calculations.
