If you've noticed lumps that are the consistency of cottage cheese on your legs, stomach and buttocks, you likely have cellulite. Cellulite occurs when fat presses through the connective tissue that attaches the muscles to the skin, according to the Mayo Clinic. This connective tissue is in a crisscrossed pattern, which creates a cottage cheeselike appearance. In most cases, home remedies, such as creams and lotions are not effective in removing cellulite, the Mayo Clinic says.

Weight Loss

Losing weight may effectively reduce cellulite in some individuals, according to the Mayo Clinic. However, it probably will not completely get rid of the cellulite. The U.S. Department of Health recommends eating a diet full of plenty of vegetables, fruit and fiber and drinking lots of water to help prevent and remove cellulite. In addition to a proper diet, getting daily exercise is the most effective way to lose weight in a healthy and permanent way. Although you may not eliminate every area of cellulite, you may see a reduced amount of cellulite.

Radiofrequency

The Mayo Clinic suggests that a radiofrequency treatment may be effective in reducing cellulite in some cases. A dermatologist or cosmetic surgeon performs this treatment on the problem areas of the skin. The process may require a series of treatments to be fully effective and includes a combination of radiofrequency treatments, infrared light treatments and negative tissue massage. Radiofrequency treatment usually is not covered by insurance, so it can be expensive.

Laser

Laser treatments may help minimize cellulite for up to six months, the Mayo Clinic reports. A dermatologist or cosmetic surgeon generally performs laser treatments for cellulite in her office. The Mayo Clinic recommends twice-weekly treatments of a combined tissue massage with diode lasers. Like radiofrequency treatments, laser treatments generally are not covered by health insurance and could be costly.
