Rugby is a sport similar to American football that originated in the United Kingdom. The basic premise of rugby is for players to run the ball through the other team's goal line and place it on the ground. This is called a try. When tackled, a player must release the ball before he hits the ground. Passing is permitted, but only laterally. It is a very physically demanding sport where players wear much less equipment than is worn in American football.

Jersey

A rugby player must wear a numbered jersey that bears a distinct pattern or color. He must also wear socks and shorts with a distinct color and studded boots or shoes. The studs on rugby shoes can be no more than 8 millimeters in diameter and must be rounded if made of metal.

Rugby Ball

An official rugby ball is oval in shape and is inflated with air. The outer shell is made of leather and it must be approved by the governing body for your team.

Head Protection

Head protection is a required since players are big and strong. It helps prevent head injuries. A rugby "helmet" resembles more of a hat with ear flaps. It is made from lightweight material like foam.

Mouthguard

The mouthguard is an important piece of equipment in rugby. It helps keep your teeth in your mouth during physical contact, and can also reduce damage around your jaw line and limit the incidence of concussion. You can get your mouthguard fitted at the dentist or buy one that you can boil and fit at home.

Shoulder Pads

The shoulder pads worn in rugby are made of soft materials and are worn like a vest. Their primary function is to protect the shoulders and sternum during physical contact.
