Your colon is a vital part of your body, as its role is to get rid of all the waste material from whatever you consume. More specifically, it removes water from your digesting food particles and bulks up your stools. There is much potentially misleading information circulating about colon cleansing, so it’s important you have a solid knowledge of the subject to ensure your colon remains healthy and active.

Colon Hydrotherapy

Also known as colonic irrigation, colon hydrotherapy is the cleansing of the bowel and colon by a professional. A tube is inserted in the anus, then water is pumped at a low pressure inside to flush out whatever waste happens to be in the colon. According to healthyjourney.org, you should have colon hydrotherapy on a monthly or at least a bimonthly basis, but you should also first consult your doctor about the benefits and any risks of colon hydrotherapy.

In the Bathroom

If possible, it is best to squat over the toilet when relieving your bowels -- some people put their feet on the toilet seat to achieve this. According to Tuberose.com, squatting allows your bowels to open up further, and supports your abdominal muscles and colon muscle to clean out your colon.

Your Colon and Your Body

The importance of your colon is so great that if it’s not working you can suffer other problems with your bodily functions. Healthyjourney.org says that if your ascending colon, the part that goes up the right side of abdomen, is swollen and pocketing, it may lead to liver issues, breathing issues or pain in your back. If you have blockages in the turns of your colon, in the upper left and right quadrants of your abdomen, you may have ear issues or dizziness. If your transverse colon, the part that crosses the top of your abdomen, is congested with encrusted fecal matter, you may have sinus congestion, allergies, foggy thinking or memory loss. If your descending colon, the part that goes down the left side of the abdomen, is enlarged and contains pockets filled with old fecal matter, you may have heart trouble, shoulder or arm problems/pain, or spleen issues.

Measurements

According to totalprevention.com, a healthy colon is about 5 feet long and 2 1/2 inches in diameter. It should weigh 2 to 3 lbs., but, healthyjourney.org warns, the average American's colon weighs 10 to 15 Ibs. This is thought to be incredibly unhealthy and needs to be cared for. Health professionals have reported on unhealthy colons weighing 40lbs.

Healthy Diet and Drinking Water

Eating healthy foods and drinking lots of water are the two most important things you can do to ensure a healthy colon. A diet full of fiber, fruit and vegetables will keep you regular and the water will loosen the stools so you don’t feel blocked.
