The key factor in losing weight is to burn more calories than you consume. Consuming fewer calories daily will help you lose weight more effectively than through exercise alone, notes MayoClinic.com. However eating less and exercising will create the fastest weight loss. What you eat is also important when cutting calories. Eating high-fat foods that lack vital nutrients can lead to binge eating. Balance a healthy diet that is low in calories and saturated fats with moderate exercise for the most effective weight loss strategy.
Eat Small Frequent Meals
Cutting your overall calories can be easier to handle if you eat every two to three hours. Eating small frequent meals throughout the day can help rev up your metabolism, to ensure your energy levels stays high, notes Tosca Reno, author of "The Eat-Clean Diet." Determine your ideal calorie count for weight loss and then divide it by five. This is the calorie count of your meals. Make sure each meal provides you with lean proteins, complex carbohydrates and essential fatty acids.
Eat MUFAs
Monounsaturated fatty acids, or MUFAs, can help prevent accumulation of belly fat and are essential for brain and organ function. Eating a MUFA with every meal can help reduce your belly fat, according to the March 2007 "Journal for Diabetes Care." Foods that are high in monounsaturated fatty acids are almonds, dark chocolate, olives, olive oil, flax oil, sunflower oil, nuts, seeds and avocados. Liz Vaccariello, author of "The Belly Fat Diet," recommends eating one small serving of a MUFA with every meal. Serving sizes should stay small--10 almonds, 10 olives, 1 tbsp. oil, 1/4 avocado or 1/4 piece of dark chocolate to keep your calorie count low.
Eat Lean Proteins
Protein is the building block of muscle. The more muscle mass you have, the more energy you will naturally burn. Fuel your muscles with healthy, lean proteins to keep your body strong. Reno suggests eating lean proteins that are low in saturated fats, such as lean turkey, chicken, beef, fish, tofu and beans. Low-fat dairy products are also protein-rich, but eating too much dairy can raise your cholesterol. Choose naturally low-fat dairy products that are void of sugars and high-fructose syrup, such as Greek yogurt.
Drink Water
Drinking water helps keep your body functioning properly and keeps excess water weight off. Replacing sugary and caffeinated drinks with water will save you hundreds of calories a day, which can result in a rapid weight loss. Women should try to drink about 9 cups of water daily, and men should try for 13 cups daily, notes MayoClinic.com.
