When the mercury in the thermometer starts to dip, you may notice the appearance of your hair and skin doing the same. The cold weather can have a drying effect on your hair and skin, which means the beauty products you swore by in the summer months may need to be updated. By taking care of your skin and using beauty products catered for the winter, you’ll feel better about yourself.
Moisturize
Indoor heating devices like central heating tend to draw moisture from the environment as well as your skin, making it dry and flaky. Try to compensate for these drying effects by using a humidifier and moisturizing your skin throughout the day. Apply moisturizer all over your body right after taking a shower to lock in moisture. You may need to use a moisturizer that contains antioxidants to combat the damage of free radicals caused by exposure to winter sun.
Sun Protection
It’s easy to forget the importance of sunscreen in the winter; however, winter sun and snow glare can potentially damage your skin. Approximately 30 minutes before you head outdoors, apply a sunscreen of at least SPF 15. If you indulge in high altitude winter activities like skiing and hiking, then use a sunscreen of SPF 20 or above, as ultraviolet rays are more intense at higher altitudes. Sunscreens containing aloe vera or coconut oil have the added benefit of moisturizing your skin whilst protecting it.
Makeup
Your favorite shades of blush, bronzer and eyeshadow that look good in the summer will need to be updated for the winter; otherwise, you may end up looking pale and washed out. To get a glowing complexion, use a bronzer a shade darker than your skin color to help neutralize your skin tone. To give yourself a healthy flushed look, apply a rosy colored blusher. Choose shimmery shades of taupe, champagne or nude eye shadow to give your eyes a warm feel, or alternatively, add a little brown to bright colors to tone them down a notch.
Hair Care
You may notice your hair taking on a dull, brittle and lifeless appearance in the cooler months. If your hair has a lot of static, try spraying your hairbrush with hairspray and then brush your hair from the root to tip to calm flyaway strands. To prevent your hair from looking dull and dry, use a moisturizing shampoo twice a week. Let your hair dry naturally, or towel dry it and then style it, instead of using a hairdryer, which may cause it to become drier and more brittle.
Lip Care
Many people forget to take care of their lips in the winter; this results in your lips becoming dry, chapped or cracked. Use a tinted lip balm with an SPF of 15 throughout the day. Try to find lip balms containing shea butter, aloe, phenol, vitamin E and beeswax, as these ingredients are great for keeping your lips moisturized, according to the staff at CBS. Avoid wearing long-lasting and matte lipsticks, as these can dry out your lips.
