As panic attacks and panic disorder are now looked upon as “real” medical conditions and those that can alter quality of life, treatment is widely available and effective, according to the Mayo Clinic. It is estimated that one out of every 75 people will have one or more panic attacks or panic episodes in their lifetime, says the National Mental Health Association. Though treatment may include pharmaceutical medication, psychotherapy or both, there are several homeopathic or natural remedies to consider as well.
Basic Health Practices To Curb Panic Attacks
According to the Anxiety and Panic Cures website, considering your state of overall health assists in determining what treatment will help. First, be mindful of how much rest you are getting. A tired mind and body is much more likely to experience emotional and mental dysfunctions like panic attacks. The body naturally recharges itself with proper sleep patterns, leaving you more prepared for the day and any stress that arises.
Moreover, it is possible that certain vitamins and minerals that keep the body functioning properly have been depleted. Holistic Online states that B vitamins are important for not only the health of the nervous system but "have been found to regulate the body's lactate levels, which are responsible for panic attacks." A complex product will provide a mixture of the various B components; such as B12, B-6, and B-1, all known to provide energy as well as calm the nerves.
Herbal Remedies
Herbs and other plants can be helpful in treating anxiety and panic episodes. Herbalist, Bob Liebert, states that “panic attacks are approached herbally with a combination of calming herbs and herbs to re-vitalize the adrenal glands." Such herbal complexes include Avena, Sativa, American ginseng, skullcap and licorice. Liebert also recommends passion flower, Valerian root and flower, skullcap, and ginger for calming the nerves and as a sleep aid.
Aromatherapy for a Balanced Nervous System
In Aromatherapy for Vibrant Health and Beauty, author, Roberta Wilson states that “aromatherapy can help you work on releasing undesirable emotions as well as on developing or increasing desirable ones.” She specifically suggests using a floral blend of geranium, chamomile, lavender, jasmine, neroli, and ylang ylang essential oils used in conjunction with carrier oil, such as, jojoba oil. This blend can be applied directly to the skin or inhaled as needed.
