Herbal Remedies for Chronic Sinus Headaches

Herbal remedies such as natural aromatherapy oils can alleviate chronic sinus headaches. The herb peppermint has been used for centuries as a natural decongestant and expectorant (to get rid of mucus). Peppermint has cooling anti-inflammatory properties that ease sinus pressure and pain. Peppermint oil is also prescribed by naturopathic doctors to treat asthma, bronchitis and throat infections. The following peppermint oil steam bath is a natural herbal treatment that doesn't cost a lot of money or time.

Step 1

Pour hot water from the tap into the bath or kitchen sink. Add one to two drops of peppermint oil. Let the bath steep for 2 minutes (which allows the oil to mix with the hot water).

Step 2

Place large bath towel over your head and move your face close to the steaming water. Do not touch your face to the water.

Step 3

Gently inhale the peppermint-oil infused steam into your nostrils. Make sure the towel is draped over and around your head to capture the steam properly. Do not open your mouth while inhaling.

Step 4

Keep the towel over your head for 2 to 3 minutes. If you become dizzy, remove the towel and stand up straight for a few minutes.

Step 5

Remove the towel and blow your nose gently with a tissue. The steam and oils will clear the mucus from your nose and will alleviate sinus pressure (that causes sinus headaches).

Tips and Warnings

  • Peppermint oil can be found at natural food stores or from online aromatherapy distributors. Other oils such as eucalyptus and lavender can also be used.
  • If you experience a slight popping inside your ears, the sinus cavities have opened, which helps with sinus pressure. If you suffer from high blood pressure or heart conditions, consult with a medical doctor before attempting a natural steam bath for sinus headaches. Do not put natural oils inside the nostrils or rub oils directly onto the skin.
