Overview

The colon receives toxins and chemicals all the time, whether through processed foods, sugars, pharmaceuticals or the environment. Often called the body's sewer system, the colon and other organs need regular cleansing. Removing impurities, including accumulated heavy metals, is the key to combating constipation, fatigue and skin and hair problems while providing your body with energy and better health. Colon cleanses replace friendly bacteria as they dissolve plaque buildup. Some of the symptoms of a malfunctioning colon are stomach pain, gas, bloating, headaches, indigestion, irritated bowels, protruding stomach, weight gain, lack of sleep, irritability and restlessness.

Step 1

Whether you use a kit or assemble ingredients yourself, allow approximately eight to 10 days to achieve a strong cleansing. A thorough colon detoxification can take up to 30 days. Read the directions on the kit carefully before starting.

Step 2

Usually, a kit has a formula to take in the morning and then at night. Make sure you drink a minimum of eight glasses of water per day.

Step 3

If you are going to fast for a few days on liquids, avoid strenuous activities. Drink water or fruit or vegetable juices diluted with water. You can also drink weak vegetable broth with no additives. The first day of the fast may cause weakness and nausea as initial toxins are excreted.

Step 4

If you supplement the treatment with foods, eat as many raw foods as possible or ones that are lightly steamed. Try to avoid animal products during this period, including eggs and cheese. Avoid all processed foods.

Tips and Warnings

  • With any internal cleansing procedure, it is likely you will feel weak or nauseous at various points as your colon is becoming cleared of toxins. Try to rest as much as possible. Make sure whatever cleanser you use contains probiotics to replenish friendly and necessary bacteria in your system. You can speed up the process through the use of self-applied or professionally applied enemas.
  • If you use an enema, do so on a limited basis so that your body does not get used to defecating with this technique only.
