In a world where fast fixes and crash diets are the norm, spirituality-based weight loss can fill a void. These diets don’t focus on weight loss, but instead help you explore your inner self and connect you to a higher force. Weight loss and better health come as a result of your inner growth.

What Would Jesus Eat? Diet

"What Would Jesus Eat?: The Ultimate Program for Eating Well, Feeling Great, and Living Longer" is a Christian diet program created by family physician Dr. Don Colbert. According to Colbert, Jesus ate a Mediterranean diet heavy on whole grains, fish and olive oil and light on processed foods. He also requires that readers follow many of the food laws used in the Old Testament, such as not eating unclean animals like pigs and following Kosher laws, which dictate that meat should be completely drained from blood before it can be consumed.

Readers who are not Christian might find the program difficult to follow, as it requires prayer and Bible reading and interpretation as a way to help you understand your choices so you can change them.

Love Hunger Weight-Loss Workbook

The “Love Hunger Weight-Loss Workbook: 12-Week Life Plan for the Body, Mind, and Spirit” by F. Minirth, P. Meier and R. Hemfelt is a spiritual approach to weight loss that doesn’t adhere to any particular faith. The program focuses on emotional eating and lack of self-love as two of the main reasons people are overweight.

To lose weight, the book takes you through a guided self-examination that includes journaling, following the 12 steps, meditating and keeping a behavior diary. Exercise and diet plans are also included, so you can learn how to eat properly and change damaging behaviors at the same time.

The Joy of Weight Loss

“The Joy of Weight Loss” from Norris Chumley is a combination of a book and DVD that explores the connection to your spiritual source and how finding it can help you lose weight and get healthier. The DVD is narrated by Susan Sarandon, who endorses the plan.

The “Joy of Weight Loss” is a seven-day plan that starts with a gratitude journal so you can become aware of all the good things in your life. Spiritual contemplation, prayer or meditation for at least five minutes a day is also essential to the success of the program. The program also addresses everyday things that might be interfering with your goal of getting healthier, such as lack of organization or concentration on a task, dealing with fear and practicing compassion. The “Joy of Life” website, which is free to access and use, offers supporting information on diet and exercise.
