The caloric content of fruit is dependent on the type of fruit. All fruits offer a variety of vitamins, and most are water-based, meaning they are low in calories. However, some fruits are higher in calories, some have more fiber, and some fruits have more antioxidants. All fruits are not created equal in calories and in nutrients.
Berries
Berries are high in antioxidants and are a filling fruit. On the high end of calories for berries, blueberries have a caloric count of 80 per cup. Strawberries follow behind at 70 calories per cup, and raspberries at 65 calories per cup. These numbers are based on raw fruits. When they are canned or frozen and sweetened, they may have more calories.
Melons
Melons are relatively low in calories; however, a lot of their calories come from sugar. One cup of cantaloupe is 60 calories and a great source of vitamin A, C, and B6. Watermelon is lower in calories with 46 calories per cup because it is made mostly of water. Honeydew is the highest in calories at 64 calories per cup.
Common Fruits
The most common fruits are apples, oranges, and bananas. These fruits all offer different nutrients, but are similar in caloric content. One medium apple yields 95 calories and is a great source of fiber. Oranges are a filling fruit high in vitamin C and are 65 calories each. One medium banana has 105 calories and is a strong provider of potassium.
Fruits Under 60 Calories
The lowest calorie fruit is a tie between apricots and lemons with 34 calories per cup. Papaya is also low in calories with 54 calories per cup. Plums and quince are 60 calories for a serving size of one cup.
Fruits Over 80 Calories
Some fruits are slightly higher in calories due to their sugar content. Grapefruit is a very filling fruit that contains 80 calories for a cup. Tangerines are filling with a good amount of vitamin C and contain 90 calories in a cup. Pears follow behind with 96 calories per cup, and mangoes have 106 calories per cup. Grapes have 110 calories per cup, and with an even higher caloric content are nectarines at 120 calories per cup. Prunes have the second highest amount of calories with 132 for only a half a cup, and dates are the highest calorie fruit with 251 calories for a half cup.
