In the 1940s, a book was written by Stanley Burroughs entitled “The Master Cleanser.” It detailed drinking a concoction made from lemonade, maple syrup and other ingredients to cleanse the colon and detox the body. Due to the low number of calories consumed on this detox plan, most physicians will not recommend following this fast, and you should talk to your doctor before trying it.

Features

The Master Cleanser plan is also known as the Lemonade Diet or Master Cleanse. The plan is followed from two days to two weeks. During the cleanse, you do not eat any solid food. Instead you drink a mixture of water, fresh lemon juice, maple syrup grade B or higher and 1/10 teaspoon of cayenne pepper. When you are hungry, instead of eating, you sip the lemonade drink.

Considerations

Along with drinking an unlimited amount of the lemonade and maple syrup drink, you cleanse the colon on the plan by drinking a salt water flush each day. To perform the salt water flush, you must drink one liter of room temperature water with sea salt. Since sea salt can not be digested, the salt water flushes your system.

Benefits

According to the Every Diet.org website, you will lose weight on the diet. However, most of the weight that you lose comes back quickly since it occurs from fluid loss. Other purported benefits claimed in the book are removal of toxins from digestive system, cleansing the kidneys and purifying the cells of the body.

Effects

Since you are not consuming many calories, you may experience nausea, headache, dizziness and mood swings. From the salt water flush portion of the colon cleansing program, you may have stomach upset, diarrhea, vomiting and nausea. If you are not feeling well, you should consult a doctor and stop the detox program.

Time Frame

You can find variations of the Lemonade Diet. For instance, you can follow a pre-cleanse and post-cleanse diet to ease in and out of the diet. This involves eliminating meats and foods high in fat before and after the fast. Instead, for a couple of days before and after you start cleansing, eat a light diet made up of mostly fruits and vegetables.
