According to the United States Golf Association, a caddy is a person who assists a golfer, including such tasks as carrying the player's clubs. The role of the caddy is greater than simply carrying the clubs, however. The caddy assists the player with knowledge of the course, including yardage, terrain and club selection. There are different tools that a caddy can use to assist golfers in this manner.
SkyCaddie
Before you tee off, it is important to know what design the hole is in. A new tool that a caddy can use to assist the player is the SkyCaddie. This handheld device gives an aerial view of the hole, so that the player knows where hazards are and how far it is to the pin, in order to help the player choose an accurate club to hit off the tee.
Laser Rangefinder
Once the player has teed off and is looking to hit his second shot, it is important for the caddy to know where the pin is in order to make this second shot the most effective. A great tool for a caddy to use on fairway shots is a laser rangefinder, such as the Bushnell PinPro. By looking through this handheld tool and spotting the pin, the laser in the device will tell you precisely how many yards you are from the pin, enabling you to give the best advice possible.
Divot Tool
Around the green, the most basic of tools for a caddy to use is a divot tool. These small devices are great for fixing ball marks and irregularities in the green caused by balls landing. Making sure that the turf is smooth and free of ball marks can ensure smoother putts for the player.
