Benefits of Ellipticals

Elliptical training equipment offers a multitude of benefits to a variety of muscle groups while increasing cardiovascular health and providing a low-impact workout. Ellipticals are standard at most fitness centers and are available for home use as well. Regular use of ellipticals can benefit a weight loss regimen, as most machines can be set at various workout levels.

Toning

Elliptical machines primarily work to tone the arms, legs and buttocks. They incorporate stair climbing, cycling and walking benefits while working the arms in a circular motion at the same time. The legs extend and push as when running, while the hips continue to rotate. To get a complete body toning, a proper stance on the elliptical that includes standing straight with head up can help the body achieve the maximum benefits and avoid back strain. By tucking in the abdominal muscles, the core of the body receives additional toning benefits.

Heart

The speed that can be achieved on an elliptical trainer can bring the user to aerobic levels that, when coupled with the total body immersion in the exercise, provide extensive cardiovascular benefits. Those looking for a more advanced workout can adjust the settings or push the pedals faster to achieve maximum efficiency in a shorter amount of time. Because the elliptical is so easy to use, studies by Precor have shown that exercisers tend to remain on the machine longer and achieve higher heart rates and greater metabolic expenditures.

Low-Impact

Ellipticals are especially beneficial to people with shin splints or joint damage. They are often prescribed for patients recovering from knee or leg surgery or those with back or hip problems that preclude them from running or participating in other high-impact workouts. Since the feet do not leave the footpads, there is very little risk of developing additional ankle or knee injuries.

Cross-Train

Cross-training can easily be achieved with elliptical trainers. The adjustable settings on most machines provide the user with a selection of resistance, steepness and backward movements. Users can rotate through the various levels during a single workout without having to move between machines.

Ease

Ellipticals are easy to use. While they do require some coordination, once a person begins the motion, there is little concentration needed because the machine is intuitive and moves with the body's natural inclinations. Elliptical trainers are usually stable, providing a solid workout with little chance at injury. The workout on an elliptical trainer is smooth and even with little variance, even when settings are adjusted.
