Types
Basketball training for adults breaks down into several different types of training. Offensive training will help develop your jump shot, layup and low post moves. If you play the guard position, your offensive training will be based around pass development and dribbling skills. Defensive training will help improve your ability to steal the ball as well as block shots. Speed training is designed to help you penetrate to the rim as well as get back on defense during a fast break.
Adult Offensive Basketball Drill 1
This offensive drill teaches you how to box out and improve your outside shooting. Stand at the top of the three point ark while two players on your team stand at the low block. On your coach's whistle, take a shot from the three point line. Have the two players at the bottom of the rim box out for the rebound. Whoever gets the rebound will pass the ball to you as you cut to the free throw line. Take a jump shot from the free throw line and hustle to the baseline. Rotate with the other players to work on your rebounding and box out moves.
Adult Offensive Basketball Drill 2
This drill will help you improve your shooting at the end of games. Place a basketball at center court and wait for your coach's whistle. Have your coach set a timer for 40 seconds on his watch. On your coach's whistle, perform 20 push ups at the baseline. Sprint from the baseline to center court and grab the ball. A defender from your team will follow you to center court to prevent you from scoring. Attempt to drive to the basket with whatever remaining time is left and get a shot off before time expires. The 20 push ups will simulate end of game fatigue and make it harder to shoot. Switch with the defender to help improve your end of game defense.
Adult Skills Drill
This skills drill will help you develop your dribbling as well as your ability to pass down court. Have your team break up into two lines, one line standing at the baseline and the other at center court. Set up six cones, equidistant from each other, extending from the baseline to half court. Have the players at the baseline dribble one at a time around the cones and perform a chest pass when they reach the end of the line. As you improve, start dribbling around the cones with your weak hand. According to Degerstrom, it is important for you to always keep your head up while dribbling the ball.
Adult Combination Drill
This drill will help improve your ability to transition from a rebound into a fast break situation. Have three players on your team stand at the free throw line. Pass a ball hard off the backboard and grab your own rebound. Immediately start dribbling down the court, passing to one of the three players on your team. When you reach the foul line on the other side, have one of your teammates pass you the ball. Take a jump shot from the foul line and repeat the drill going the opposite way.
