Dark eyes are an unsightly beauty challenge for many people, especially as they age. Although the entire area of skin surrounding the eye could have excess pigmentation or thin skin showing the blood vessels underneath, most aesthetic eye issues are associated with dark circles under the eyes. According to Dr. Diane Berson of Weill Medical College at Cornell, the primary causes involved with dark circles are heredity and genetics. These two factors unfortunately cannot be modified with easy remedies, but the symptoms and contributory factors related to dark eyes can be lessened with a few techniques.

Cold Compresses

Dark eyes can result from the strain of looking at a computer screen all day. The fixed attention and squinting often associated with monitor use can make the eyes look tired. In “The Art of Aging Gracefully,”Jill Haynes, aesthetician, says that cold compresses will help to relieve this tiredness and relax the eyes, brightening their appearance. Place sliced cucumbers that have been refrigerated directly on the eyelids. Moist, cold tea bags also work well. Another recommendation is to dip cotton balls in cold milk and place them on the eyes.

Concealer

According to Nancy Tang with University of Illinois’s Online Gargoyle, the application of make-up concealer can brighten the eyes and reduce the appearance of small wrinkles. Choose a light concealer that is half a shade brighter than your foundation color, and apply sparingly under the eyes. The point is to blend it in so it looks natural, not cake it on. Yellow and peach colors work well to improve the appearance of dark eyes, as they counteract the bluish tones that make the eyes look sunken.

Fillers

Getting sufficient rest, limiting alcohol intake, and applying topical ointments can alleviate dark eyes, but sometimes are not enough. For those with stubborn dark circle problems, a visit to a dermatologist or plastic surgeon for filler treatment may be warranted. In this procedure, Restylane and Juvéderm fillers are injected by specialists into the tissue under the eye. This reduces the appearance of dark eyes by covering up the excess bluish pigmentation or blood vessels. Effects last around six months, and recovery time is minimal. Side effects of this treatment can include bruising, inflammation and allergic reactions.
