Dribbling is an integral part of the game of basketball. It is used in almost every aspect of the game to advance the ball down the court, create plays, protect the ball and avoid traveling, or a double dribble. It takes a lot of practice and determination to become proficient at dribbling a basketball. There are several basketball dribbling drills that can help.
Two-Ball Drill
To play a great game of basketball, you need to be able to dribble without looking at the ball. The two-ball drill helps you accomplish that. Stand at one end of the court with a ball in each hand. Look straight ahead and begin walking. Bounce the ball in your right hand, and as soon as it makes contact with the floor, bounce the ball in your left hand. Continue that pattern all the way down the floor. Once you get the hang of it, increase your pace. Your goal is to sprint down the floor dribbling both balls without looking at them.
Figure 8 Dribble
The figure 8 is a speed dribbling and agility exercise. Stand with your feet about shoulder-width apart. Get low to the ground and dribble around and through your legs in a figure 8 shape. Switch hands each time the ball passes between your legs.
Crab Walk
The crab walk drill is a walking and dribbling drill that will help your balance and overall ball-handling ability. Step forward with your right leg, and at the same time bounce the ball through your legs with your left hand. You will receive it with your right. On the next step, reverse the order and bounce it through with your right hand. Continue this pattern for the length of the court.
Ball-Drop, Hand-Clap
The ball-drop, hand-clap drill may be tricky to master, but will really test your speed and coordination. Stand with your feet together, flex your knees and bend forward at the waist. Hold the basketball behind your knees with both hands and let it drop to the floor. As soon as you let go, bring your hands around to the front and clap them together, then try to reach back around and catch the ball before it hits the floor again.
