A proper pH balance is essential to optimal health, according to the American Naturopathic Medical Association. The optimal pH of the blood in humans is between 7.35 and 7.45. Acids increase the pH level, while alkaline substances lower it. Although there are supplements available to alkalize the body, they typically come with potentially dangerous side effects, and there are ways to alkalize the body without resorting to supplements. Consult your physician before taking steps to alter the pH level of your body.
Avoid Acidic Foods
According to the American Naturopathic Medical Association, avoiding or reducing the consumption of acidic foods will help balance your body's pH level and increase alkaline reserves. There are numerous acidic foods that are common in the typical American diet, including grain products such as breads, cereals, rice, barley and rye flour. Most meats, including beef, mutton, chicken, lobster, turkey and fish, also raise acid levels in the body. Also avoid other acidic foods such as corn, peas, peanuts, lentils and sauerkraut.
Increase Alkaline Foods
The highest alkaline foods are figs, apricots, raisins, lima beans, prunes and Swiss chard, notes the American Naturopathic Medical Association. Other high-alkaline choices include fruits such as tomatoes, avocados, mangos and bananas, and vegetables such as kale, carrots, eggplant and okra. Lemon juice, freshly squeezed orange juice, coconut milk and olive oil may also help alkalize the body.
Avoid Coffee
Although coffee is the stimulant of choice for many people, it can also lead to a host of health problems by altering the body's pH level. Reducing coffee intake can help alkalize the body, according to the International Wellness Directory. Organic, shade-grown coffee beans are thought to be less acidic than other types of coffee. Other sources of caffeine, such as soft drinks and teas, can also acidify the body.
