In volleyball, the word “attack” refers to an offensive hit toward the floor of the opponent’s court. Focused drills can help players develop the necessary skills for successful attacking, including proper footwork and approaches to the net, jumping, arm swinging and wrist snapping. Look for drills that allow players to contact the ball repeatedly. Repetition will help players improve their attack more quickly.
Partner Toss and Attack
Simple partner toss and hit drills can help players develop their hitting technique in a controlled environment. Divide your team into pairs and have each pair stand about 6 feet apart. One partner should begin by repeatedly tossing the ball to the other partner to hit. The two players should then rotate roles. In a variation of this drill, players can toss the ball to themselves to hit to the partner. Whichever way you run the drill, instruct players to focus on reaching their arms as high as they can to contact the ball and then snap the wrist when hitting.
Consecutive Approaches
Have your players line up along one sideline. Have players take turns making several approaches toward the net from different positions as they move across the court to the opposite sideline. Players should practice swinging their arms with each approach.
Consecutive Attacks
The consecutive attacks drill helps players build endurance and stamina at the net. Have your players line up behind the baseline. Stand at the sideline with a cart of balls. Toss balls to the first player in line to hit until the player hits 10 balls in bounds, each with a good approach and arm swing. To make the drill harder, require players to hit 10 balls in a row in bounds. If you have an assistant, run this drill on both sides of the court. Divide the team into two groups and have one group stand on either side of the court.
Hitting Between Blockers
Set up one setter and one attacker on one side of the court and two blockers on the other side of the court. The blockers should stand a few feet apart. Throw a ball to the setter to set to the attacker. The attacker should try to hit the ball between the two blockers. Continue tossing balls to the setter until the attacker successfully passes the blockers with attack hits five times. Then rotate new players onto the court.
