Solar blankets are used as barriers to keep unwanted hot and cold temperatures where they are supposed to be. There are a number of different types of solar blankets made from various materials with vastly different purposes. Most of them work on the principal of reflecting radiant heat energy from the sun’s rays. They are also used for absorption to heat the space beneath. Solar blankets can help make you feel more physically comfortable and environmentally-friendly at the same time.
Pools
The use of solar blankets on swimming pools extends the swimming season in cooler climates. They come in standard sizes or you can purchase the material, which usually resembles bubble wrap, and cut it out to match the exact size and shape of your swimming pool. Keep the solar blanket on the pool when not in use. This warms the pool water 10 to 15 degrees, making it more comfortable for swimming in cooler outdoor temperatures. It also slows water evaporation.
Attics
Solar blankets for the home consist of a radiant barrier blanket that is applied on top of the attic’s insulation. In wintertime, warm air in your home’s living areas rises until it meets the solar blanket up in the attic. It is then reflected back down and trapped in the room rather than escaping the home through the attic and roof. In the summertime, the radiant barrier reflects the sun’s heat entering the attic from above and sends it back outside. It takes less time and energy to make the home’s living area temperatures comfortable.
Physical Emergency
Solar blankets are used to help keep people warm in emergencies. Whether stranded outdoors on a hiking trip or in a car during a blizzard, the shiny lightweight material will keep body heat inside the blanket. It will prevent you from frostbite, hypothermia or other maladies by blocking out rain, moisture and extreme temperatures.
Camper Trailer
Using a camper trailer for an outing may prompt the use of solar blankets to prevent the interior of a trailer from reaching very hot or very cold temperatures. Especially for areas with cold nights, the solar blanket can collect the sun’s energy during the day when everyone is out hiking and participating in other activities. When they return in the evening, the camper will be warm and comfortable for socializing with other camping guests or for sleeping in a cozy environment. For very hot climates, use a solar blanket to reflect the sun’s radiant heat energy away from the camper.
