The human ability to recall specific details of incidents, persons and places is remarkable. The brain stores tons of memories which are either long term or short term. An example of a long term memory is when you recall something from your distant past like the name of your first grade teacher while a short term memory could be recounting what you had for lunch an hour ago. Humans need and enjoy their ability to “call up” things and often seek techniques to improve their memories.

Grouping

When you are trying to memorize a large amount of material or a long number you can successfully retain the information by learning it in chunks. Group the information into small segments that you can easily retain. Then add the groups together two by two until you have learned it all.

Intense Focus

When you must commit something to memory quickly you need to have intense focus. Cut out all distractions such as cell phones, email and find a quiet place. It helps if you choose an area that is uncluttered the way you need your mind to be for your concentration.

Repetition

One of the simplest and most effective ways to remember material is by repeating it until it is easily recalled. If the information is written down you can read it over and over until it all sinks in. According to the Psychology 4 All website it works well to recite the information just before going to bed.

Rhyming

The human brain has a natural ability to remember words that are put together with rhythm. That is why you remember song lyrics and rhyming poetry easier than prose that lacks these elements. Take information you need to know and make rhymes from it. You will remember it better and the creative process will benefit your mind's fitness.

Brain Exercises

According to the Helpguide website, you should perform brain exercises to strengthen your recall. The site recommends you practice working with your less dominant hand for tasks like brushing your teeth. The concentration involved will improve your strength of mind. Also, practice memorizing odd facts and trivia as this will help the memory “muscle” grow stronger.

Organize Information

For easy recall, group the information you are learning by rational relationships. For example, if you want to remember the names of all the winners of the Wimbledon tennis championships you can organize their names by birth country, era or style of play. This will make it easier to recall them all if you learn them in one of these ways.
