A clean, properly fitting scuba mask allows you to see clearly underwater during a dive. Once you have purchased a mask that fits well, care for this important piece of equipment to ensure that you will be able to use it for many dives to come. Proper scuba mask care can help prevent the mask from getting scratched, moldy, smelly or warped.
Before Use
When you purchase a new scuba mask, you will probably notice a thin oil film on the inside and outside of the mask’s lenses. Many mask manufacturers put this film on the mask to protect it from being scratched in shipping. Before you dive with the mask, you should remove the film and rinse the mask. Use several drops of a gritty, non-gel toothpaste to remove this film. Rinse the mask to remove all traces of the toothpaste and then dry it thoroughly.
Care
Never place your scuba mask face down while you assemble the rest of your gear, rest on a dive boat or wait to begin a dive. Placing your mask face down can scratch the lenses. Set your mask face up, so that the lenses do not rub against any surfaces. Also, do not leave your mask in direct sunlight for long periods of the time. Ultraviolet light can cause the silicone of your mask to deteriorate or warp.
Cleaning
After each dive, whether you dived in saltwater or freshwater, you should rinse your scuba mask thoroughly in clean, fresh water to wash away any salt, sand, grit or bacteria that may have accumulated on your mask during the dive.
Storage
Make sure your scuba mask is completely dry before you put it away for short-term or long-term storage. Dampness can cause bacteria to grow on the mask, which can lead to odors you want to avoid. Always store your mask in a sturdy case to reduce the risk of scratches or other nicks.
Defogging
Commercial mask defogger solution and non-gel toothpaste both work to prevent mask fogging. Some divers also recommend using saliva if you find yourself without any defogger solution or toothpaste. Before each dive, rub a few drops of solution, toothpaste or saliva on the interior of the mask and then rinse it a few times with clean water.
