Most baseball and softball players use batting gloves to improve their grip on the bat, and to reduce bat sting when they hit the ball. Batting gloves also provide some protection as the player rounds the bases, and if they need to slide. Some players even wear batting gloves while fielding to provide additional padding and coverage. Because baseball and softball players constantly use their hands while playing, gloves frequently need adjusting. Fortunately, adjusting batting gloves is a quick process, so players can keep their focus on the game.
Step 1
Wear the correct size of batting gloves. Batting gloves that are too big will slide around and cause blisters, while gloves that are too small will restrict movement. Sizes are available for both youths and adults, ranging from small to extra large. Many manufacturers include a size chart on the back of the package to help determine the correct size.
Step 2
Try on batting gloves to check the fit before purchasing. They should fit snugly, with your fingertips barely touching the ends of the fingers of the glove. Make sure you can easily flex your hand and move it freely. Wearing the gloves, take a few practice swings with a bat to see how they feel. If you plan to wear the batting glove under a fielder's glove, try it on with the batting gloves to make sure it is comfortable.
Step 3
Adjust the gloves as needed when they start to feel too loose or too tight. To tighten the glove, simply pull the strap on the back of the glove off the Velcro strip and pull until it feels snug. Lie the strap back down across the Velcro strip to secure.
Tips and Warnings
- If you need to adjust your batting gloves while you are at the plate, be sure to step out of the batter's box first. Some players purposely step out to adjust their gloves to try to throw off the pitcher.
