Softball players must consider many factors when selecting a bat. Bats are available in different sizes and in a variety of materials. Bats are usually weighed in ounces, and choosing the correct weight is an important decision. Using a bat that is too light can cause a player to tend to swing early, while a bat that is too heavy will be difficult to swing in time. A few guidelines and simple tests can help softball players decide on the best bat weight.
Step 1
Consider the player's age. Younger players should use a lighter bat; this will help them to develop proper swing form as they learn. Older players, with more strength, should use a heavier bat.
Step 2
Evaluate the strength and ability of the player. Smaller and beginning players should use a lighter bat until they develop more arm strength and batting skill. Advanced, stronger players should use a heavier bat, which will result in more power while hitting.
Step 3
Test the weight of the bat by having the player hold the bat out to her side for about 20 seconds. Right-handed batters should use their right hand, and left-handed batter should use their left hand. In general, if she is able to hold the bat without her arm starting to drop or shake, it is not too heavy.
Step 4
Practice swinging with correct form to make sure the bat does not feel too light or too heavy. Some retailers may allow players to take the bat for a few hours on loan to a batting cage to try out.
Tips and Warnings
- Before buying a new bat, players may ask teammates if they can try out their bats. This will give the player an idea of the weight range that works best.
- Never buy a bat that is too heavy for a child, thinking that they will grow into it. This will cause poor swing development ,and make hitting the ball more difficult.
