Ten-pin bowling is a popular game enjoyed by people of all ages throughout the world. There are 10 pins set up at the beginning of each frame, and the object is to earn points by rolling a ball down the lane and knocking down the pins. A game consists of 10 frames for each player. You are allowed up to two "throws" in each of the first nine frames, then up to three throws in the 10th. The player with the highest score is the winner. Bowlers can employ a variety of physical and mental techniques to improve their outcome.

Free-Swinging Arm

Allow your arm to swing freely with the bowling ball to make it go where you want more often. When your muscles are tense during a shot, your ball ends up off line. To ensure you have a free-swinging arm, relax your grip inside the ball. If you squeeze your fingers, there will be tension in your arm. Have your ball fitted, because a loose thumb hole will force you to squeeze to keep from dropping the ball.

Lower-Body Leverage

As you take your last step just before you release the ball, bend your lead knee to get closer to the lane. Slide your front foot toward the foul line, but keep it straight. Let your back leg swing behind your body away from your bowling hand to provide a counter balance to the rest of your body movement. The goal is a balanced shot with plenty of power.

Visualize

Visualization is a technique used in many sports and areas of life. Before you take your shot, as you are surveying the lane, visualize the shot you are about to take. Watch it leave your hand, and travel down the lane exactly as you want it to go. This will help program your nervous system to make the shot you want.

Watch the Pros

Watch professionals play. Even if it is on television, you can get a sense of what is happening and what they do to be at the top of the sport. Watch the different shot-making techniques, and notice how they behave between shots and while their opponent is shooting. These are often the times where you can learn the most about the mind-set it takes to be a great bowler.
