Racquetball is a racket sport that is typically played indoors on a 20-by-20-by-40-foot court. There are four walls and a ceiling that can all be used during game play. Racquetball is played with a light, air-filled ball and short-handled racket, and is a form of cardiovascular exercise. There are several strategies that can help you win a game of racquetball.

Deep End Pin

The deep end pin is a racquetball strategy designed to keep your opponent pinned near the back wall of the court. There are two methods, one called the pass/pinch and one called the pass/pass. Once your opponent is pinned in at the back, you can end the rally near the front. In the pass/pass method the goal is to keep your opponent running from side to side with each shot. It is effective if you notice his fitness level may be in question. The pass/pinch method is similar, only you throw in a "pinch," which is similar to a drop shot in tennis. The objective is to hit the ball toward one of the side walls near the bottom so it will bounce twice close to the front wall and you will win the point.

Serving

There are a couple of types of serving strategy that are effective in racquetball. One is called a drive serve, and the other is called a jam serve. With the drive serve, your objective is to serve the ball to either of the back wall corners, but drive it low so it will bounce twice before your opponent can get to it. The jam serve uses the side walls of the court to throw an opponent off balance. By using the proper spin, the ball reacts in an unpredictable way and is difficult to return.

Returns

Anticipation is a key strategy when it comes to returning a serve. Since there are so many options as far as where the ball can be hit, positioning is important. You want your racket centered in front of you in a backhand grip, and you want to face the side wall when you make contact. Note any tendencies your opponent has during the match to help you get to the ball faster.

Shot Selection

There are some specific strategies regarding shot selection that will help you succeed more often when playing racquetball. if the ball comes to you at your chest level or higher, hit it off the ceiling. If the ball is between your chest and thigh, it is the perfect time for a passing shot. If you receive it below your thigh, try for the kill shot to end the rally.
