Cleansing the colon is a way to rid the body of harmful toxins that can cause everything from headaches to colon cancer. While there are many over-the-counter remedies for cleansing the colon, many natural remedies are safer and less harsh on the body. Natural remedies for cleansing the colon work with the body’s normal way of doing things.
Eat More Fiber
Eating fiber is one of the easiest things you can do to cleanse your colon. Eating raw fruits and vegetables aids in digestion and is a way to fight many problems associated with poor colon health, such as excessive gas, diarrhea, constipation and bloating. Eating more fiber also gives you the added benefit of feeling fuller longer so you’re consuming far fewer calories. The USDA recommends consuming 25g of fiber for women and 38g for men daily.

Often used for the purposes of weight loss, the Master Cleanse was developed by Stanley Boroughs, an alternative medicine practitioner, as a way to detox the colon and improve digestive health. The Master Cleanse consists of three phases: the Ease-In, the Lemonade Diet and the Ease-Out. During the Lemonade Diet phase, you only drink a lemonade mixture that consists of fresh lemons, water, maple syrup and cayenne pepper. During this time, a major flush of your colon will take place, completely evacuating the bowels and relieving you of any digestive issues you may have been experiencing.
High Water Enema
A high water enema is a way to cleanse the colon because it reaches an area of the bowels that is usually missed by over-the-counter enemas or laxatives. A high water enema passes water through the anus into the colon, flushing out the area and removing any harmful chemicals or contents that may have been present. You can use other fluids besides water to perform an enema. Coffee is a popular alternative to water because it increases the amount of bile removed from the colon.
Drink More Water
Drinking more water is another simple, natural remedy for cleansing the colon. Lack of water can cause constipation and bloating and prevent the body from ridding itself of harmful toxins that will not only affect the health of your colon but also your overall health. According to Barbara Levine, director of the Nutrition Information Center at the New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center, you should drink an amount of water in ounces that corresponds to 1/2 your body weight. For example, a person weighing 160 lbs. should drink 80 oz. of water every day.
