Sperm cells, also known as spermatozoa, swim in semen that is produced in the testes of males. Their main function is to fertilize the egg in the process of conception. According to the World Health Organization, a healthy sperm count is 20 million sperm cells per ml, with 50 percent of sperm cells moving forward and at least 2 ml of semen volume. If sperm cell count is low, there are several ways to increase it.
Step 1
Get out of the heat. Prolonged exposure to heat in the genital area can have a negative impact on sperm cells. In order to decrease your exposure to heat and increase your sperm count, avoid repetitive use of laptops, hot tubs, baths and tight fitting underwear.
Step 2
Get some exercise. Exercise helps to increase circulation and reduce weight. Being overweight can have reduce the amount of testosterone (the male sex hormone) that is produced.
Step 3
Keep your ejaculations three or more days apart. Ejaculating more often can reduce the amount of semen in your body, ultimately lowering the amount of sperm cells you have.
Step 4
Stay away from bicycles. The bicycle seat can compromise sperm count by causing a buildup of heat, especially when tight shorts are worn. Riding bicycles can also cause damage to nerves and blood vessels responsible for sperm production.
Step 5
Avoid harmful substances. Your lifestyle choices can have a direct impact on your sperm cell production. Avoid excessive use of drugs, alcohol and tobacco products, all of which can reduce sperm motility and the amount of sperm that is produced.
Step 6
Eat foods that promote sperm production. Eat plenty of whole grains, fruits, vegetables, seeds, nuts and legumes. These are high in key vitamins that are beneficial to sperm production, such as zinc, vitamin E, vitamin C and selenium. Avoid foods that are high in fat and cause indigestion such as deep-fried foods, processed foods and refined foods.
