Vitamins are micronutrients found in food and dietary supplements that are essential for life. They regulate metabolism and assist with the biochemical functions that release energy from food. Each vitamin serves a different purpose in the body and promotes optimal health in their own way. Vitamins B and C are water soluble, meaning they cannot be stored in the body and must be taken in daily. Vitamins A, D, E and K are fat soluble and are stored in the body’s fatty tissues for a period of time.
Vitamin A
Vitamin A is an antioxidant that is instrumental for vision and eye health and can prevent skin disorders, such as acne. It is a group of compounds that enhances your immune system, promotes the formation of bones and teeth, and is necessary for new cell growth. Vitamin A protects the cells against diseases like cancer and slows the aging process.
Vitamin B
The B vitamins--including B1 thiamin, B2 riboflavin, B3 niacin, B5 pantothenic acid, B6 pyridoxine and B12 cyanocobalamin--promote the health of the nerves, skin, eyes, hair, liver and mouth, according to James F. Balch in his book, “Prescription for Nutritional Healing.” They are involved in proper brain function and may be helpful in treating anxiety and depression. The B vitamins are actively involved in energy production and can relieve symptoms of fatigue.
Vitamin C
Vitamin C, an antioxidant, is required for tissue repair and growth, adrenal gland function and healthy gums. It enhances immunity, protects against infection and can guard against cancer by attacking free radicals in biological fluids. It promotes the healing of wounds and protects against blood clotting and bruising.
Vitamin D
Vitamin D is produced by the body when rays from the sun hit your skin and trigger its synthesis. It is required for the utilization of calcium and phosphorus and is necessary for normal growth of bones and teeth. It helps regulate your heart beat, protects against muscle weakness, enhances immunity and reduces inflammation in the body.
Vitamin E
Another antioxidant, Vitamin E improves circulation, supports tissue repair and helps prevent cancer and cardiovascular disease. It promotes healing and normal blood clotting, as well as healthy skin and hair. It reduces blood pressure and prevents cell damage by inhibiting oxidation and the formation of free radicals in the cell membranes. It slows down aging and may prevent age spots.
Vitamin K
Vitamin K is needed for normal blood clotting and is essential for bone formation and repair. It promotes healthy liver function, increases resistance to infection, protects against certain cancers and encourages longevity.
