Water is the body’s main component, making up about 60 percent of your body weight, according to the Mayo Clinic. Everything in your body depends on water, from flushing toxins from the organs to carrying vital nutrients to your cells. However, retaining too much water can cause you to have headaches and be bloated. Fortunately, there are some ways to lose water weight fast.

Increase Potassium Intake

Potassium is a key nutrient that helps your body balance fluids so you don’t retain water. If you don’t have enough potassium in your body, you can gain water weight, since your body won’t be able to regulate its water levels adequately. Fruits and vegetables such as bananas, broccoli, spinach and oranges all contain potassium. You should eat fiveg of potassium daily to keep your body fluids balanced.

Fiber and Diuretics

Foods such as yogurt, high-fiber cereal, brown rice and whole grains help your body eliminate food and liquids faster. Ginger, dandelion and juniper are natural herbs with mild diuretic properties and can be brewed in a tea to help alleviate bloating. Be careful when taking any diuretics, even natural ones, as they may interact with medications you currently take or can affect certain medical conditions.

Reduce Sodium

Too much sodium will make your body retain water. To avoid retaining water and to lose water weight fast, avoid high sodium foods such as salty nuts, pickles, olives and frozen or processed foods. Don’t add extra salt to your food and purchase reduced-sodium foods when possible.

Avoid Sugar

Too much sugar raises your body’s insulin levels. This inhibits your body’s natural ability to expel sodium. Stay away from sugary foods such as cookies, cakes, ice cream and anything with high-fructose corn syrup.

Take Calcium

According to the Mayo Clinic, calcium may reduce water retention to help you lose water weight. Calcium can be found in dairy products, such as cheese, milk and yogurt, or you can take 1,200mg a day in supplement form to reduce water retention.

Drink More Water

It may sound strange, but the more water your put into your body, the more water weight you will lose. According to the Mayo Clinic, you should drink at least eight glasses of water each day. This extra liquid will help you urinate more frequently, cleansing your body of any toxins and helping you lose water weight fast.

Exercise

Exercise stimulates the body and drains excess fluids from your lymphatic system. Without exercise your body can become bloated and unable to regulate fluids properly. You should exercise for a 1/2 hour, three times a week to flush out excess water and salt through sweating.
