Pyrithione zinc (ZnP), also known as zinc pyrithione, is a chemical compound with antifungal properties. It is the active ingredient in many commercial shampoo products. Its uses are primarily restricted to conditions of the outer skin and scalp. While ZnP products are available without a prescription, it is wise to discuss any medical condition with a doctor, and never use a ZnP product as a substitute for prescribed medication.

Dandruff

ZnP is most widely used in shampoos to control dandruff, or seborrheic dermatitis. This condition affects the scalp and is characterized by itching or even a rash under your hair. Dandruff also leads to visible flakes of skin that fall from the hair. You can see these in the hair itself or on clothing near the scalp. Products containing ZnP for this purpose include conventional bottled shampoos, but also creams, lotions and bars of soap. According to the Mayo Clinic, working a ZnP product into a lather on your head and rinsing can be an effective treatment for this condition, if repeated regularly. You may use some products more than once per day, while others may be used once or twice per week.

Psoriasis Treatment

Psoriasis is a skin condition characterized by red, itchy flaking skin. ZnP offers similar benefits for psoriasis symptoms as it does for scalp irritation. According to Medic8 and Psoriasis Guru, commercial ZnP products may alleviate some of the irritation of psoriasis. Since psoriasis typically occurs in places other than the scalp, creams and lotions may offer more convenient applications of ZnP. You discuss the use of ZnP for psoriasis treatment with your dermatologist if you suffer from this condition.

Paint

ZnP offers antifungal benefits to more than just biological ailments. According to Medic8, ZnP can help a protect paint from mold, algae and mildew when mixed into the paint solution. This could indirectly improve your health, since many people are allergic to a variety of molds. The structure of the ZnP chemical also makes it resistant to sun damage, which may also lead to longer-lasting paint jobs.

Other Skin Conditions

It is possible that some other skin conditions may find relief using a ZnP lotion or shampoo. According to Medic8, fungus in athletes foot, eczema and ringworm are among the skin irritations potentially helped by ZnP. As ZnP is a relatively safe over-the-counter product, it cannot hurt to try it for these problems. However ZnP is an irritant to the eyes, so be sure to avoid contact there and rinse thoroughly if you do. As always, discuss your symptoms with a physician if they are severe or do not go away after using ZnP or any other form of treatment.
