Walking is a form of exercise that has many benefits. According to The American Journal of Cardiology, walking is not only a tool for weight loss, but consistent walkers show a decrease in heart disease and Alzheimer's disease. It is safe, effective and a full body workout. Walking is also a wise choice for those who are beginning to workout. When deciding to start a walking routine, you have to determine how you will carry out this exercise. You could invest in a treadmill, or go for a walk outside. While both forms lead to effective workouts, they are very different.

Using a Treadmill

The treadmill is a common option because it allows you to complete a workout without weather permitting. If it's too humid, or even storming, it will not matter because the treadmill is inside. Another added bonus is that it can be used while watching TV. This can lead to distraction and possibly add more time to your workout. Most treadmills come with adjustable speeds and inclines, which make it a great tool for interval training. You can begin by walking uphill, then running downhill, followed by slow lunges and a brisk walk.

Expensive and Large

Unfortunately, treadmills are large and hard to store. You will need a sizable area for it and it will need to be plugged in. Some treadmills are small and can fold away; however, they do not have adjustable speeds or inclines. Treadmills are also very expensive, some costing up to $1700.

Outdoor Walking

One of the most common reasons for walking outside is that it is free. This is an option for those who do not want to spend money at the gym or invest in an expensive treadmill. Outdoor walking also provides different terrains, which can add resistance and increase speeds without you being aware of the changes. Also, according to HealthinAging.org, studies from "The Journal of the American Geriatrics Society" show that getting outside and enjoying the fresh air is good for the body agility and mentality.

Weather and Timing

Though outdoor walking is enjoyable, it can not be done anytime and anywhere. Timing plays a strong factor in whether or not you can go for a walk. It may not be a safe option to go for a walk at night, or during early hours. A solution for this is to find a partner or a walking group. Visit www.meetup.com to find a walking group near you.

Walk for Health

Walking outside and walking with a treadmill equal out to the same exertion levels and both provide successful workouts. A study from "The Journal of Applied Physiology" in 1995 and another from the American College of Sports Medicine in 2001 showed that while both forms of exercise lead to the same increased heart rate and caloric burn, some participants walked at increased speeds subconsciously while on the treadmill. The choice is primarily up to you. Find the form of exercise that you believe is more convenient and will lead to a better workout.
