Athletic, dance, martial arts, stationary cycling, water, outdoor, Latin dance, belly dance, hula and hula hoop are only a few of the many forms of aerobic dance exercise classes available. You should take into consideration your music preference, style preference, fitness goals and your experience level. If you are unsure which class would be best for you, consult with a fitness center staff member.

High-Impact

High-impact aerobic dance combines dance moves and athletic moves into easy to follow routines set to motivating music. High-impact aerobic dance involves jumping, running and moving at a high-intensity pace and may at any time have both feet off the floor.

Low-Impact

Low-impact aerobic dance is a modified version of high-impact, where one foot always stays on the ground. This modification helps reduce stress on the ankle, knee and hip joints. Low-impact aerobic dance uses modified athletic moves, such as foot-touch-out-jumping-jacks and no-bounce knee-lifts, set to music for an effective cardiovascular workout.

Specialty

Aerobic dance is constantly evolving, and there are always new classes to choose from. Hip-hop, belly dancing, boot-camp, Hula-hoop and martial arts are specialty classes. These classes are inspired by various forms of athletics and dance to give the basic aerobic dance class variety. Switching up your aerobic dance class with various styles will work different muscles, hold your interest in fitness and give you a mental boost. Finding a class that you really enjoy and find physically and mentally stimulating will help get your body in shape and help you reduce stress, according to The American Council on Exercise.

Step

The step aerobic dance class is only one of many that use equipment as the main proponent of the workout. There are now many different styles of step dance aerobic classes offered. Some classes are more athletic with simple to follow, yet challenging moves, while others get their inspiration from dance and use advanced choreography. It is important to stay safe when participating in a step class, or any class that uses equipment. Keep stress and pressure off your joints at all times. Always ask the instructor for directions before beginning a new class, and always work at your own level and pace.
