Russian massage therapy is very similar to traditional Swedish massage. During a session, the client lies on a specially designed table and the therapist stands above him to perform the strokes. The client is unclothed, and the massage is performed directly on the skin, with the aid of oil. The Associated Bodywork and Massage Professionals notes that Russian massage can get deeper than traditional Swedish variations, because the therapist uses the shoulder and elbow during deep work.

Injury Relief

The Associated Bodywork and Massage Professionals note that Russian massage is considered a type of sports massage. The deep-tissue massage work is performed after an individual is injured. The friction techniques used during the session will help to break up scar tissue and adhesions. The massage will also help to promote faster healing in the injured area.

Pain Relief

The Encyclopedia of Alternative Medicine notes that Russian massage can help to reduce muscle aches and pain associated with certain disorders. Russian massage is used to soothe the pain associated with arthritis, carpel tunnel issues, sprains and strains, and other muscle injuries.

Increased Blood Flow

Massage Therapy 101 notes that the strokes used during a Russian massage therapy session will increase blood flow to the targeted area. This blood flow comes from the kneading, stretching, and deep manipulations performed during the work. The increased blood flow brings more oxygen to the underlying tissue and helps to remove waste and debris from the area.

Relaxation

As with most massage modalities, a primary benefit of Russian massage is stress relief and relaxation. Massage sessions are typically performed in a soothing environment and the therapist can adjust the pressure so you are comfortable. You should walk away from the session feeling both physically and mentally relaxed.
