How to Use an Electric Toothbrush

Brushing your teeth at least twice a day is the surest way to keep teeth and gums in top shape. Using an electric toothbrush is one of the best tools for assuring your mouth the best care, especially if you are not inspired to brush as thoroughly as you should. Electric toothbrushes are made with rotating heads that allow the bristles to move on their own, reaching into crevices to remove debris while helping to reduce stains. Additionally, when used properly, electric toothbrushes help to strengthen the gums, thus helping to reduce the potential of disease. When used in conjunction with a recommended toothpaste, you will make yourself and your dentist very proud as your oral health increases.

Using an Electric Toothbrush Properly

Step 1

Moisten the toothbrush head and then apply toothpaste to the bristles. Even though the head is smaller than a conventional toothbrush, it is best to apply the same amount of toothpaste that you are used to using.

Step 2

Place the brush inside your mouth and then turn on the toothbrush. Turning it on beforehand may cause the toothpaste to fly off the brush.

Step 3

Begin to work the brush over each tooth, paying attention to the gum line as well as all areas around your teeth. You will not need to do much as the rotating bristles will do the necessary scrubbing on their own.

Step 4

Clean the outside of your bottom teeth and then the inside. Repeat with your top teeth.

Step 5

When you have finished cleaning every tooth and along the gum line, turn the brush off. Do not turn it off outside of your mouth as you will be sprayed with moisture.
Rinse the toothbrush and then return it to the electric charger.

Tips and Warnings

  • Replace the brush head when it is warn so as to receive the most efficacy from the bristles. Be careful when working around the gum line. This area may be sensitive at first and could bleed. Do not be alarmed. Once your gums get stronger they will happily receive your electric toothbrush as it does its deep cleaning work. Remember to floss after brushing. Even with the positive effects of an electric toothbrush, flossing is essential for complete oral hygiene.
  • Do not press the bristles against your teeth as this can damage the enamel and also wear the brush down too quickly.
