Eye strain is a condition that occurs as a result of staring at a book or computer screen for prolonged periods of time. According to Vision Works USA, more than 50 percent of computer users experience eyestrain, headaches, blurred vision and other visual symptoms related to the sustained use of a computer. Consequently, eye strain can cause bodily fatigue and a reduction in work efficiency. There have even been indications that people with heavy computer use are at risk for glaucoma. In addition to receiving regular eye exams, there are some exercises that can be performed to ease eye strain and strengthen eye muscles.
Palming
Vision Work USA notes that this palming exercise will train you to relax your eyes, and bring them healthy energy. First rub your hands together, creating friction, until they feel warm. Next, cup your hands and place them over your eyes. Be sure to not let your palms touch your eyes. Your fingers should have a slight overlap at the center of the forehead. Stay in this position for around two minutes, resting your elbows on a table if your arms should get tired.
Near-Far Focus
This exercise works to help improve the flexibility of your eyes, states Vision Works USA. First, hold one of your thumbs 6 inches away from your nose. Keep your thumb directly in front of your face and focus on it. Take a deep breath and exhale slowly. Next, focus on an object that is around 10 feet away. Take another deep breath and slowly exhale. Repeat this pattern up to 15 times for best results.
Blinking
Mayo Clinic explains how blinking often can refresh your eyes. It is customary for people to blink less when they are working on a computer. This can cause dry eyes during periods of prolonged computer use. Blinking in excess produces tears that can help moisten and lubricate your eyes. Train yourself at making a conscious effort to blink more often throughout the work day.
