According to an article published in "The New York Times," the number of nail salons nationwide has doubled over the past 10 years, which has actually brought down prices. Many salons now offer mid-week and monthly specials on their services. Types of treatments vary from salon to salon, but typically a nail salon provides services such as manicures, pedicures, artificial nail application, and maintenance and nail art.

Manicure

A manicure varies slightly from salon to salon, but typically includes soaking hands in warm water, cuticle removal, filing and shaping of the nails, using lotion to soften the skin, and providing hand massage, a base coat, nail polish and top coat. For an extra fee, some salons will include a paraffin wax treatment service to condition and soften the skin.

Pedicure

Pedicures are similar to a manicure but are performed on the feet. A pedicure usually begins by soaking the feet in a hot, treated foot bath. The treatment includes cuticle remover and a foot massage with lotion to soften and condition the feet.

Pedicures also usually include a sloughing procedure to exfoliate rough, dry skin patches. Pedicures generally include a base coat, polish and top coat. Some salons may offer a warm foot masque.

Artificial Nails

Nail salons generally offer one of two types of nails: gel or acrylic. Acrylic nails are more popular than gel nails. Acrylic nail application is a two-part process, while the gel application is a one-step system. Each requires different levels of maintenance, according to the website Hooked on Nails.

The type of artificial nails offered depends on the nail technician's preference and specialty. You might have to try both to decide which type you prefer. Many salons offer nail art for an extra charge.

Nail Art

Salons provide nail art services, which is a way for you to express yourself for a special occasion or to wear day to day. The nail tech uses a variety of techniques and materials. Nail art includes painted stripes and plaids, jewels, glitter, freehand artwork and air-brushed pictures.

Call ahead to ask your salon which nail art services and materials are available. The intricacy of your nail art is dependent on the nail tech’s abilities and experience.

Polish Change

Most nail salons provide a polish-change-only service. Polish changes are usually inexpensive and take less than 15 minutes. A polish change can be done on both your hands and feet and are performed to extend or maintain your manicure or pedicure. They can be done on natural nails or artificial nails.
