A fastball can move from the pitcher's hand toward a batter at 90 miles per hour or higher. The baseball helmet design intends to protect the head of the batter from the potential damage inflicted by something traveling that fast. When hit with a ball, the helmet may protect your head, but nothing will save the helmet. A solid hit can crack the hard plastic used to create a baseball helmet. Restoring a baseball helmet that is old or damaged is not difficult and may cost less than a replacement.
Step 1
Wipe the exterior of the helmet down with soapy water. The bonding agent needs a clean surface to adhere.
Step 2
Sand down the damaged section with fine-grit sandpaper. Do not press too hard; you may cause the material to cave inward. Use a file to sand any open grooves in the helmet. Wipe the debris from sanding off the surface with a damp cloth.
Step 3
Press duct tape on the inside of the helmet to support cracked areas. Cut off an appropriate sized piece of tape and lay it on the inside of the helmet, across the crack.
Step 4
Apply a bonding agent to the crack in the helmet. Follow the instructions provided with the product for proper application. Some bonding products come with an applicator while others work best applied directly to the surface. Let the bond cure per the product directions.
Step 5
Sand the bond, once cured, so that it is flush with the surface of the helmet.
Step 6
Paint the entire helmet with spray paint suitable for plastic. Once the helmet dries, remove the tape from the interior.
