Mental stimulation is important for those who are young and old alike. When you are young, stimulating your mind helps you to learn new things. As you get older, declining mental capacity can lead to concentration issues and memory loss. In much of the same way normal exercise and a proper diet help keep your body young, activities that exercise the mind keep your mind young. According to "Greater Good" magazine, regular mental stimulation might even be able to reverse the effects of mental aging. Brain teasers and mind exercises are a way to keep the mind active.

Sudoku

Sudoku is a puzzle game that involves both numbers and math. The game helps improve arithmetic skills while it sharpens your reasoning and deduction skills. Each Sudoku puzzle starts with a grid that features 81 squares. The grid is separated into nine sections that each have nine small squares. The purpose of Sudoku is to fill each box with numbers between one and nine. The catch is that you cannot repeat the same number in the same section, column or row—and each column, row and diagonal line must add together to equal the same number. The difficulty of the puzzles vary depending on how many numbers are already listed when the game begins.

Word Search

Word search puzzles can help improve the brain's concentration and spelling skills. A word search features a page of random letters jumbled together that has words hidden within them. The purpose of the puzzle is to find every word on the list and circle each word. The words can be spelled up and down, side to side or diagonally. Depending on the puzzle's difficulty, the words might be spelled backward. For children who are learning to spell, this is a fun puzzle to help them identify their spelling words. If you have a child who is learning about colors, farm animals or other topics, a themed word search puzzle book can be a learning tool used at home.

Crossword Puzzles

One of the best ways to stay updated on current events while keeping the mind active is to read the newspaper. The newspaper also provides a convenient source to exercise your vocabulary and intellectual skills with crossword puzzles. The puzzles have a series of hints or questions that are numbered with spaces that correspond with each answer. The hints can cover musicians, television shows, history, current events and much more. As you fill in the spaces, the words begin sharing letters and crossing one another. Picking up a newspaper or a book containing crossword puzzles can keep your mind as sharp as possible while building your knowledge and vocabulary.
