Dry hair, whether it's from too much exposure to the elements or excessive shampooing, often becomes frizzy. Frizz can turn your well-kept hair into a veritable mane. If you're a lion, that's fine. If you're not a lion, several styling and haircare products can help provide your hair with the care and hydration it needs to battle frizz and return to its naturally soft, sleek look.
Dry Hair Shampoos
Some shampoos can strip your hair of essential oils, warns haircare expert Paula Begoun. For dry hair, that can leave your hair even drier and potentially more frizzy or coarse. Instead, opt for a shampoo that's formulated with conditioning emollients and is designed to hydrate your hair while it simultaneously lifts away dirt. After testing 195 shampoo products, "Real Simple" magazine's editors ranked Pantene Pro-V's Nature Fusion Smooth Vitality Shampoo as the best hair wash for dry hair.
Hair Conditioner
Hair conditioners include rich oils or moisturizers that hydrate your hair shafts and help seal in the moisture for a long-lasting, soft appearance. Regular conditioning can help stave off the frizz normally associated with dry hair. For the best results for your dry hair, choose a deep conditioner designed to sit in your hair for an extended period of time--oftentimes, overnight--to deeply moisturize your hair. "Elle" magazine says one of the best deep conditioners is Garnier Fructis' Instant Melting Conditioner. It's made with apricot kernel oil and avocado oil to battle frizz.
Less Heat
Heat-based styling tools, such as a ceramic flat iron, can make your hair even more dry and can also exacerbate frizzy hair conditions. If you don't want to give up heat-based styling tools, set them to the lowest temperature possible. Gradually raise the temperature until you find the coolest temperature at which you can still achieve the hairstyle you want.
Silicone Serums
Silicone-based hair serums improve your hair's shine and "silky feel," reports Begoun. For such reasons, she says they're often added to anti-frizz products to help make your hair instantly more sleek. The editors of "InStyle" magazine gave Paul Mitchell's Super Skinny Serum their rare Editors' Pick award, saying its silicone content helps to tame "coarse, unruly hair."
