Smart Shopping for Parenting Books
Overview
Parenting can be a daunting and often overwhelming task. Providing physical, intellectual and emotional development to our children is every parent's duty. But finding the stamina, inspiration or time to nurture your children can be challenging, so books on parenting are a huge help. These can offer guidance and support, with answers to questions about esteem, anger, behavior, development and other parenting issues from experienced authorities. While some parenting books offer encouragement, inspirational anecdotes or humor to help us on our parental journey, others can also provide sustenance to those needing reassurance or affirmation of their parenting skills.
What to Look for
What to Look For
Sometimes specific medical information is needed in parenting, and other times an uplifting parental account gives hope. Determining what specifically you are looking for can help you select the appropriate author for your parental issue.
When looking for a professional, the choices are many. Expert authors can range from medical doctors, psychologists, psychiatrists to social workers. These authors have credentials after their name and can offer medical or clinical information and advice.
Books written by other parents tend to be inspirational or present novel accounts of parenting. Reading another parent's account of struggles, joys and problem solving can be uplifting and offer solutions you might otherwise not have considered.
Review the book's contents or index to see if what you're seeking is listed. This will give you an idea if this is the right book for you. Randomly reading a paragraph from a parenting book will give you an idea of how the book is presented.
Consider the length of the book and how much time you are able to devote to your research. Is there enough or too much detail? Is the text small or large and bold, with bullet points? Small type can contain specific, detailed information, while bold, bullet points can be easy and quick to read.
Common Pitfalls
Common Pitfalls
Though some parenting books offer guidance, abdicating your own authority in search of an expert's sometimes undermines your own parenting logic, confidence and instinct. If a suggestion goes against your values, religion or even your instinct, do not implement it. Parenting advice is not a one-size-fits-all solution. Environmental factors, biological factors or personality traits of your child are influences in solving your parenting concerns.
Books scripted with many anecdotes offer little in terms of concrete medical advice, but can be inspirational for parents looking for stories similiar to their needs.
Recognizing your parental concerns and needs will help you to choose what parenting books are appropriate.

As a Cancer Support Group leader, I both use and respect the resources Livestrong Non-profit put out. This article is so true and I love what the author says,"Books written by other parents tend to be inspirational or present novel accounts of parenting. Reading another parent's account of struggles, joys and problem solving can be uplifting and offer solutions you might otherwise not have considered." Often young people won't listen and learn directly but will absorb good things unwittingly through what they read casually. As an author, I've tried to accomplish this very thing....
