Diet
When it comes to hormonal imbalances, no one is exempt. Both men and women are susceptible. One of the most common reasons for an imbalance in men is diet. High amounts of saturated fats, processed foods, refined carbohydrates and fast foods can lead to an overabundance of fat on the body. This is turn reduces the production of the key hormone testosterone, which is responsible for muscle strength, energy, mood regulation and sex drive.
Contraception
Birth control pills have been around since the 1960s and women utilize them to avoid getting pregnant. Two substances called "progestins" and "progestogens" are often used in birth control pills. These are synthetic and they are sometimes confused with "progesterone." They might be effective at contraception, but they also cause a hormonal imbalance.
Bad Habits
Smoking and excessive alcohol consumption already come with their own particular set of damaging effects to the body. The lungs, liver, skin, heart and brain are all altered and damaged. But these bad habits can also take their toll on the hormones. Men who consistently smoke and drink alcohol run the risk of having lowered testosterone levels. Nicotine that is found in cigarettes releases enzymes that deactivate testosterone and other hormones. When alcohol is consumed in large amounts, it raises estrogen levels and lowers testosterone levels.
Stress
Both men and women can be victims of stress from time to time. This can be caused from a number of factors that are related to job and home life. Regardless of the cause, the end result can take its toll on the body. The hormones cortisol, estrogen and DHEA are the most effected. When they are out of balance, weight gain can be experienced and blood sugar levels can be sporadic.
Chemicals
Conventionally raised livestock is administered estrogenic hormones to make them more bigger. Eating high amounts of this meat can cause hormones to get off balance. Other chemicals such as dioxin, PCB, DDT and chlorine are also used for foods and in products like varnishes, disinfectants, drugs and lubricants. Consuming or breathing in these toxins can cause an imbalance in your hormones.
