Underarm hair generally appears during puberty according to KidsGrowth.com. Removing underarm hair became popular in the early 1900s states the Hair Removal Tips website and it is currently part of most women's grooming routines. Contrary to the common misconception, shaving or removing the hair under your arms will not make it grow back darker or thicker. Choose a method based on your budget and level of pain tolerance.

Shaving

The easiest way to remove hair from under the arms is to shave, according to the Simply Hair Removal website. The hair may appear to grow back thicker because it is cut off at the skin level, where the hair shaft is thicker than at the tip. Shaving can be done daily while showering. According to the Teens Health website, some of the negatives of shaving may include the possibility of bumps, cuts, razor burn and ingrown hairs.

Depilatory

Depilatories can be used to remove armpit hair. Since the area may be more sensitive than other parts of the body, test a small patch before applying the cream to the entire underarm area. Depilatories come in creams, sprays and liquids that are applied, left on for a few minutes then rinsed off. Since they work closer to the skin than shaving, regrowth may take longer, so you don't have to use them as often.

Waxing

Waxing the underarm hair involves applying hot wax directly to the armpit. It is left on until it becomes firm, then it is pulled off rapidly, ripping the hair out from beneath the surface of the skin. This can be done at home or by professionals in a salon or skin care clinic. Either way, waxing can be painful for a few minutes, but hair will regrow more slowly.

Plucking

You may be able to pluck hairs from your armpits, according to Teens Health. This method can be quite painful and time consuming as you yank each hair out from beneath the surface with tweezers. Regrowth will take longer because you'll remove the hair from beneath the surface of the skin. If you choose to pluck your hair, you may experience some swelling that can be reduced by applying ice directly to the armpit for about five minutes afterward.

Electrolysis or Laser

Electrolysis or laser hair removal is permanent, and it may require more than one session to get rid of all the hair. Both electrolysis and laser destroy the hair follicle, preventing it from growing more hair. These methods are expensive, according to Simply Hair Removal, and they should be done by trained professionals.
