Acne refers to growths on the skin caused by pores being clogged with sebum, the skin's natural oil. Acne can include blackheads, whiteheads, or red lesions that are either small or inflamed. Large pimples called cysts can cause your skin to scar. Natural facial treatments may clear your acne and prevent scarring, though there is no scientific proof that they work.
Tea Tree Oil
MayoClinic.com states that studies have shown that products with 5 percent concentration of tea tree oil can be as effective as medicated lotions with 5 percent benzoyl peroxide. However, it may take longer to see results when you use tea tree oil as opposed to a product with benzoyl peroxide. Tea tree oil can cause dermatitis and may worsen an acne rosacea skin condition, so check with your doctor before using tea tree oil to treat your acne.
Glycolic Acid
Glycolic acid comes from sugarcane, unripe grapes, pineapples and various melons, and can help unclog your pores, remove dead skin and improve acne scarring, though it can irritate your skin or cause it to sting. There is currently not scientific research that proves natural acne treatments such as glycolic acid can successfully treat acne.
Zinc
Zinc is a mineral known for its healing properties. You can get it in your diet or take it in supplement form. Zinc's ability to reduce inflammation is why people use it to help the appearance of their acne. Many skin creams that target acne breakouts contain zinc as an active ingredient. Consult your physician before using zinc to treat acne.
Sandalwood
Sandalwood, which acts like a disinfectant, is a natural herbal remedy that can help improve acne breakouts and scarring. Apply sandalwood paste directly on your acne or scars, and leave it on while you sleep. It may take a week to several weeks to notice improvement. Check with your health care provider before using sandalwood for acne.
Vitamins
Two vitamins that may help acne scarring are vitamins E and C. Drink a lot of water with these vitamins to help them work more effectively. You can take them in supplement form and also use liquid vitamin E directly on your acne and scars. It may take a couple of months to see a difference. Natural food supplements are not proven to treat acne or scarring, and should be used under the care of your physician.
Rosehip
Rosehip oil may help your skin renew cells and produce collagen. Massage it twice a day for a couple of weeks on your skin where there is scarring. Note that there is no scientific proof that home remedies such as rosehip oil will clear acne or scarring.
