Noticeable upper lip hair can be embarrassing for if you are a woman. You probably may want to remove the hair. Depending on the thickness, coarseness and color of the hair, not all hair removal options may be suitable for you. Your lifestyle and the sensitivity of your skin are also factors to consider when choosing a hair removal method for your lip. Some methods require constant maintenance, while others leave the upper lip free of hair for several days or weeks.
Creams
Creams, or commonly called depilatories, are safe to use to remove upper lip hair when following the directions on the box or tube. The cream has a chemical that removes the hair by burning the hair at the skin's surface. You can perform upper lip hair removal at home with a depilatories and the product is available at local drug stores and supermarkets. Removing your upper lip hair with a cream is inexpensive, usually only costing several dollars. You place the cream over the hair on your upper lip and leave the cream on your lip for the length of time that the manufacturer suggests. After you rinse the cream from your upper lip, the hair is no longer visible.
The downside to using a cream to remove your upper lip hair is the possibility of burns or skin irritation, according to Teen Health from Nemours. The harsh chemical can irritate sensitive skin even when left on your upper lip for the manufacturer's recommended time. Burnt skin or blisters can occur from leaving the cream on for a long period time or applying the cream to broken or irritated skin. Removing your upper lip hair with a cream is a temporary solution and if your hair is dark and coarse, you may have a shadow from the hair underneath the skin after removal and while the hair is growing back. Performing a patch test with a small amount of the cream before removing all of the hair on your upper lip can help you to determine if your skin will react negatively towards the product.
Wax
Waxing is a method of hair removal for your upper lip that a stylist can perform in a salon or you can perform at home. Wax for your upper lip is available in drugstores and beauty supply stores. You can purchase the wax in liquid form or in strips. The liquid form of the wax requires you to heat up the wax in a microwave, applying the wax to your upper lip with a stick and place strips of fabric over the wax, according to Hair Facts. After the wax hardens, you grab and pull on side of the strip to remove the hair. When using ready made strips, the strips are pre-cut to the size for your upper lip and have wax present on one side of the strip. You activate the wax by rubbing the strip between your two hands and then apply the strip, wax side down, to your upper lip. The removal of the strip is the same process as liquid wax. After waxing, the hair may not grow back for several weeks. Though waxing is more expensive than other temporary upper lip hair removal methods, waxing requires the least maintenance and last the longest.
Razors
Razors are the quickest and least expensive option for upper lip hair removal. After applying a shaving cream to your upper lip, you use the razor to remove the upper lip hair by making downward strokes. Shaving against the hair on the upper lip may cause ingrown hairs. Using a sharp, new razor on your upper lip hair can prevent nicks or cuts. Most women do not choose the option of shaving for upper lip hair removal because of the shadow that the hair creates on the upper lip. Upper lip hair can grow back in a few hours or the next day with the shaving method.
